Berbatov Strike Sinks Boro

Boro played well against Manchester United, but a Dimitar Berbatov goal was enough to send Boro home with no points.

Middlesbrough FC put in a solid performance against Manchester United, with Gareth Southgate making 3 changes to the team that lost to Everton.

Tony McMahon became a father on Monday morning and missed the game. Matthew Bates started his first game since the last day of the 2005/06 season.

David Wheater and Afonso Alves both started, replacing Andrew Taylor and Mido.

Ross Turnbull and Matthew Bates put in a disciplined performance which very nearly paid off with a point for the visiting team.

Tuncay could have given Boro the lead in the 62nd minute when he dived to meet Bates' cross into the six-yard area but diverted the ball wide.

Berbatov finally made the breakthrough in the 69th minute when he volleyed home from close range after Carrick's cross from the left had rebounded off Wheater.
