Mowbray keen on Dyer

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has admitted that he is interested in signing free agent Kieron Dyer and it is thought a deal could go through in the next couple of days.

Dyer was recently released from Queens Park Rangers and as many know, he has had a career plagued by injury and hasn’t played a substantial amount of games for a number of years.

But, Mowbray could be willing to give the 34-year-old one last chance of regular first-team football and feels as though the Englishman could play a big part in the club’s promotion hopes this season.

The football results haven’t been great in recent weeks and some business does need to be done this month.

The Boro boss said: "I've had some conversations with Kieron. If Kieron was fit and playing for us then he would be a huge asset for our club.

"I've watched some footage of him playing against Gareth Bale for QPR and he did well.

"He's scored in the FA Cup against West Brom and he's been available, fit and playing. I'll have to see if something can be done and we might be close to that.

"If Kieron plays football for us and helps win football matches then I think he would be an asset."

There is no doubt that the former Ipswich Town man is a great footballer, but signing him is a big risk as his record shows he simply doesn’t stay fit for long enough.

Dyer is an England international of course and at the moment, he is fit to play, so is sure to be desperate to find a club. His time at QPR wasn’t exactly a memorable one and maybe a move to The Riverside will be his chance to show what he can still do.

It might not be a move that goes down very well with the Boro faithful as they will take a look at his track record and wonder why the club’s money is being spent on someone who hasn’t done anything in the game for a while.

Mowbray knows a good player when he sees one though and if he can land Dyer on a pay-as-you-play deal, it might be a smart bit of business from the boss.
