Mowbray wants a striker

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray is on the lookout for a striker as he looks to put the finishing touches to his squad before the end of the transfer window.

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray is on the lookout for a striker as he looks to put the finishing touches to his squad before the end of the transfer window.

Boro, who beat Leeds on Saturday, lost Kris Boyd in the summer and Mowbray only has Marvin Emnes and Scott McDonald at his disposal.

football bettingpundits note how Mowbray is on the search for a permanent addition to his squad but, if that plan fails, he would be tempted to dip into the loan market.

However, with Emnes, who netted the winner at Elland Road, and McDonald forming a formidable partnership, the former West Brom boss will not panic buy.

“We’re not flush with options and we’re working behind the scenes to try to help the situation,” he told the club’s official website.

“And yet the end of August is not last ditch. There’s always the loan market we’ve got to try and explore.

“After the initial 13 or 14 players we’re down to very young players. We’re trying hard to look around to see what reinforcements we can get, but we need the right kind of quality and they don’t come cheap.

“There aren’t rows and rows of them to choose from, we have to look hard and I don’t want to dilute the quality with just any player who comes along.”

Mowbray is still frustrated by the amount of time it is taking to get Faris Haroun international clearance.

The Belgian international has yet to be granted permission to start and will miss the game against Barnsley.

“Hopefully we’ll get it through and get him some involvement,” he added.

Mowbray has been dealt some good news after Julio Arca made his return to the side against Leeds.

The 30-year-old midfielder, who set up Emnes’ winner, is fresh from signing a new two-year deal at the Riverside and has returned to the squad following injury.

The former Sunderland player offers experience and quality in the middle of Mowbray’s midfield.
